Modern Artisans Overview
Modern Artisans is based in Raleigh, North Carolina, and specializes in handcrafted gifts and decorative items for the home and garden. While many of their items are available in quantity, those quantities are often limited, due to the fact that everything is made by hand.
On the plus side, that means that the inventory is constantly changing, and you’ll likely see something new and interesting every time you visit the site. They make that easy to do, since there’s a “New Arrivals!” link right on the home page of the site.
While you can buy all kinds of things in their store, you’ll find that most items involve home decor, kitchenware, garden art, and jewelry. It’s an odd mix, to be sure, and yet it works well.
Their decor is certainly eclectic, and largely consists of art prints, plaques, and metal sculptures. They also have a large selection of decorative clocks for both desktop/tabletop use and for decorating your walls.
Garden “art” includes birdhouses, sculptures, welcome signs and plaques, chimes and mobiles and more.
Their kitchenware section includes both useful tools as well as serving items, and their “Coordinating Themes” section allows you to buy a variety of items that will match one another.
You’ll find earthenware mixing bowls, pie plates, chicken roasters, bean pots, coffee mugs, and other serving utensils. You’ll also find handcrafted hardwood spoons, as well as such things has hand blown glass salt and pepper shakers.
The handcrafted jewelry includes bracelets, necklaces, earrings, pins and brooches, and jewelry boxes to store them.
If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, you can click on the “Popular Interests” link on the home page and see what others have been buying. That’s a great way to discover new and interesting decorative items that you might not have thought to search for yourself.
The company donates 1% or so of their profits to charitable causes through their “Crafting a Better Tomorrow” program, and they’re all organizations that pretty much everyone can admire – organizations to help animals, diabetes research, leukemia research, and many other worthwhile organizations that aren’t controversial in any way.
Given the hand crafted nature of all of the merchandise in their store, their prices are quite reasonable. Nearly all of the merchandise on the site is priced between $10 and $99, though a few items, such as some of their more unusual clocks, are a bit more. I particularly liked their unusual, yet oddly appealing, Aardvark clock (see photo.)
For gifts, they makes it easy to pick something out, as they have handy links based on price – “Under $30,” “Under $50,” and “Under $100.” You can also choose gifts by theme, occasion, or the gender of the intended recipient.
If you still can’t decide what sort of gift you want to give, there’s an easy option – they offer gift certificates.
They also offer gift packaging. On the page for each item, right on the pulldown menu where you add the item to your cart, you’ll have the option of adding a gift box and a personalized card for a modest price.
Payment is pretty straightforward; they take most major credit cards. It’s easiest to order online, but if you need assistance in ordering or just want to talk to someone, you can also call their toll-free number to place an order.
You’ll have the option of creating an account when you place your order. This isn’t required, but if you create an account, your name and address will be saved for future orders, making it faster to order a second time.
Shipping is quite affordable, and is based on the price of the item(s) you’re buying – but only to $99. Orders over $99 receive free shipping, and if you’re in a hurry, expedited shipping is available.
The company tries to ship within one business day of receiving your order, so you should receive your merchandise fairly quickly.
You’ll also find a reasonable return policy. If you’re unhappy with your purchase, you can return it within 30 days of purchase for a full refund.
