Sewing Machines Plus reviewA few weeks ago, I did a review of a terrific site for buying fabric, and if you like to sew or quilt, you’ll definitely need fabric.  Fabric alone isn’t going to get you a finished dress or quilt.  Unless you’re a glutton for punishment, you’ll want a sewing or quilting machine.

If you’re like a lot of people, you likely have the one you inherited from Mom or even Grandma.  That was great for them, but if you’re serious about sewing, you’ll want something better and more modern.  That’s where Sewing Machines Plus can help.

Sewing Machines Plus sells sewing machines, as the name suggests.  But they also sell a lot more than that, including just about anything you could possibly need to create anything using fabric and thread.

Sewing Machines Plus has hundreds of sewing machines, quilting machines, sergers and more, including ultra-heavy duty industrial machines, if you’re the sort that likes to sew in high volume.

They’ve also got free shipping on most orders, a great guarantee and a price policy that’s hard to beat.

Sewing Machines Plus Overview

get new sewing machines at sewing machines plus
Time to get rid of Grandma’s antique!

Sewing Machines Plus has been in business for more than 40 years.  The company operates out of San Marcos, California, and they have an actual brick and mortar store there. If you’re in the neighborhood, you can stop in and look them up.  On their site, you can also take a virtual tour of the store, so you can get a good idea of what they have in stock.

It’s a lot!

Most people who need a sewing machine either drag out their antique that’s been hanging around the family for decades or they run down to Wal-Mart or somewhere similar to buy whatever is available.  If you’re sewing something once a year, either of those solutions might work for you.

If you sew on a regular basis (and you would, if you had a great machine,) you’ll want something better.  But what do you need?

Sewing Machines Plus has hundreds of machines from which to choose, in a wide variety of specialties and price ranges.  That means that you can buy the machine that you need at a price that you can afford.

sewing machines plus brandsIf you ask most people to name a sewing machine company, they might manage to come up with “Singer.”  That’s fine, but Sewing Machines Plus carries more than 70 different brands of sewing machines.

They have them in prices ranging from a low of about $69.99 to a high of more than $13,000.  Obviously, most people aren’t going to need a machine in that range, but there are literally hundreds of machines in between, each with their own unique features.

You just need to find the one you need.  But sewing machines aren’t all they sell at Sewing Machines Plus.  Sewing Machines Plus also sells sergers, quilting machines, embroidery machines (yes! Machines just for embroidery!), and industrial machines.

They also sell sewing furniture.   Sure, you can sit your sewing machine on a card table if you like, but why not get a dedicated sewing table that has drawers for storing your thread, needles, bobbins and other accessories?  You’d have everything in one convenient place.

Reasons to Shop at Sewing Machines Plus

There are a number of reasons why it makes sense to shop at Sewing Machines Plus, rather than to just buy a machine from anywhere.  Here are a few of the benefits that Sewing Machines Plus has to offer:

  • Free shipping within the lower 48 states on orders of $49 or more.  Sewing machines are big, bulky, and heavy.  They cost a lot to ship, but if at Sewing Machines Plus, it’s usually part of the price.
  • Price match guarantee – Find it cheaper somewhere else?  Let them know and they’ll match the price.
  • Financing available.   Don’t have the cash to pay in full right now?  Sewing Machines Plus can arrange financing with low monthly payments and interest as low as 0%.  Really.  Check with them for details.
  • 60 day money back guarantee – Sewing Machines Plus wants you to be happy with your purchase. If not, just give them a call and they’ll refund your money.
  • Need help?  Sewing Machines Plus has expert sewing machine consultants on staff.  They can help you find the machine you need with the features you want.  Just give them a call.
  • Service – Sewing Machines Plus offers service for most makes and models of machines, from routine repairs to more serious problems.
  • Three year warranty – Many of their machines (and all of their long-arm quilting machines) come with a free 3 year warranty against defects in materials and craftsmanship.  That’s hard to beat.
  • Lifetime support for your purchase.  Buy your machine from Sewing Machines Plus, and they’ll help you out with any problems you have with it for the life of the machine.

It’s easy to shop at Sewing Machines Plus, too.  You can select a category at their site, such as sewing machines or quilting machines, or you can browse the “Recently Added” section to see what’s new in their store.

Besides machines, Sewing Machines Plus also sells sewing supplies such as thread, bobbins, embroidery designs, needles, scissors, and even vacuum cleaners so you can clean up your mess after you’ve created your quilting masterpiece.

Sewing Machines Plus Summary

Buying a sewing machine is something that a lot of people do without giving it a lot of thought, mostly because they don’t realize that there are lots of machines out there and that buying the one that’s best-suited to your needs will save you both time and money.

Sewing Machines Plus can help you by providing you with the expertise you need in selecting a machine, along with having a stock of hundreds of machines from dozens of different brands.   They offer free shipping on most purchases, a 60 day money back guarantee, financing on many of their machines, and fast shipping.

If you’re looking for a sewing or quilting machine, you should definitely give Sewing Machines Plus a look.

Fabric.com Review – Lots of Choices!

fabric.com reviewWhile most people prefer to buy their clothing, drapes or quilts ready-made and ready to use, a lot of people prefer to make their own.  Some do it because they want to save money.  Others do it as a hobby; they simply like making things.  Others doe it because it allows them to make things that they cannot readily buy.

All are good reasons, and all offer a good reason to take a look at Fabric.com.  As the name would suggest, Fabric.com offers a place to buy fabric.  Yes, they have that.  They have an incredible amount of it, in fact.  But they have a lot more than just fabric.

If you’re the handy type who enjoys making things, you’ll be astonished at the depth, breadth and variety of material available for sale at Fabric.com, all at great prices.

Fabric.com Overview

Fabric.com is a Web-only store that ships from a warehouse in Georgia.   They’ve been in business since the early 1990s, and they are currently owned by Amazon.  Even if they did have a brick and mortar store, it would be nearly impossible to navigate.  Why?  Because Fabric.com has literally tens of thousands of fabric items in stock.  If you’re looking for it, they probably have it, and they probably have it in quantity.

Quantity is good; it means that they’ll have enough for your project, regardless of size.  Quantity is also good, because Fabric.com offers discounts for volume purchases.

While quantity is good, variety is better, and that’s why you’ll want to take a look at Fabric.com for your cloth and sewing needs, rather than just jump into your car and run down to Wal-Mart.  Sure, they have some fabric there, and for some projects, what they have may suffice.  But if you’re working on something extra-special, extra large, or just something unique, you may well want to take advantage of Fabric.com’s incredible selection of material.

They’ll help you get ideas

When you’re looking through their vast selection of material, they’ll show you an image of what it looks like, show you the price per yard, and indicate how many yards they have in stock.  They’ll also point out that if you buy a certain number of yards, the per-yard price will drop to a lower one.

Fabric.com has material that covers just about anything you could ever possibly want to make out of fabric.  If you click on their “Brands” page, you’ll see that they have 992 different brands in stock, and multiple types of fabric from each of those brands.

You could spend weeks just sifting through everything they have in the store.  Fortunately, you don’t have to do that, as Fabric.com makes it quite easy to navigate.

The main sections of the store are divided into:

  • Home Decor Fabric
  • Apparel Fabric
  • Quilting Fabric
  • Notions & Patterns
  • New Arrivals
  • Sale

If you’re looking for material for a new set of drapes, you’d click on the Home Decor section.  On that page, you’ll have multiple menus to choose from that will allow you to refine your search:

  • Categories (Burlap, Corduroy, Denim, Faux Leather, Satin, etc.)
  • Color Family
  • Fabric Type
  • Fabric Patterns
  • Brands and Designers (nearly 1000 of them!)
  • Usage
  • Theme
  • Weight
  • Fiber Content Range
  • Collection
  • Width Range
  • Product Features
  • Specialty Shop
  • Average Customer Review
  • Just Arrived
  • Discount

Those options are available for each of the main categories, making it really easy to zoom in on what you’re looking for.  Each section also features a highlighted brand, so you can learn more about the individual brands that Fabric.com carries.

There’s also a quick menu at the top of each page that will allow you to quickly pick out a particular brand if you know which one interests you.

project galleryNot sure if a particular fabric is right for you?  Not a problem; Fabric.com sells swatches for many of the items that they have in stock, and they’re quite inexpensive.  A modest $1.50 shipping charge will cover as many swatches as you’d like to order.

Shipping is a pretty good deal at Fabric.com, too.  Their basic shipping rate is $4.99 per order within the continental United States for orders up to $48.99.  Orders of $49 or more come with free shipping, which can save you a bundle if you’re ordering a lot of material.

There’s also a discount/sale section, and when I checked it, there were literally thousands of items listed there. Keep in mind that just about everything on the site is available at a discount if you simply buy more of it.  I saw material in their sale section priced as low as 59¢ per yard.

Material isn’t all they sell at Fabric.com, however.   After all, you can’t make anything out of cloth if you don’t have the right tools.  They also sell all of the basics that you’d need to create just about anything from scratch:

  • Sewing patterns, notions and supplies (needles, thread, etc.)
  • Irons and sewing machines
  • Knitting and crochet supplies
  • Craft supplies

It’s a one-stop shop for just about anything you can make out of textiles.

And what do people make out of textiles?  You’d be surprised at how clever people can be, but you’ll be even more surprised when you can actually see it.

Fabric.com has added a “Project Gallery” to their site, and anyone is free to upload photos of their own creations to share with site visitors.

There are stunning photos of dresses, quilts, blankets, dolls, Halloween costumes and more.  This will not only give you an idea of just how clever and creative some people can be, but it will also offer some inspiration for ideas of your own.

Fabric.com Summary

If you’re the creative, crafty type, you’re likely familiar with the selection available at your local crafts store or your local Wal-Mart.  For many projects, what’s available locally will do.  On the other hand, if you’ve never visited Fabric.com and taken the time to browse through the tens of thousands of items they have for sale there, you’ll never know what you might be missing.

If you’re not sure what you want, not sure what’s available, or not even sure what you want to create, Fabric.com can help.  Check out the Project Gallery or browse through the various styles, colors and brands of fabric, and you’re sure to find something you love.

Then all you have to do is get out the sewing machine and make it come true.
